On this page I will try to answer many of your questions. I will also educate you about skin lasering. I will not use sales methods to “sell” you on this service.

Let’s keep it real!

To start, I will comment on the different issues people use lasers to fix or improve, what we can or cannot do and I will explain how different lasers work for different skin issues.

Medical/Surgical Laser vs. Cosmetic/Beauty Laser

Imagine a person has very deep wrinkles on their face and spots that go deep into the skin. A plastic surgeon may use a powerful Co2 laser to literally vaporize several layers of skin. FYI, we do not do this.

In this example the person looks as if they had been in a fire and their face was badly burned. And, it takes months for this intensive surgical lasering to heal and is painful.

This is called Ablation. The goal of this surgical lasering is to burn off the top layers of skin so over time new skin grows to replace the old skin. The new skin looks younger but it might take 6 months or longer to heal and look normal + the pain is real!

That is called medical/surgical use of lasers.

Our focus is on anti-aging and beauty use of lasers.

Our Q-Switch Laser can improve the following skin issues

1 – Clear freckles and spots such as age or sunspots

2 – Clear and improve older yellowish or discolored skin

3 – Remove Tattoos

4 – Lighten and brighten facial skin while also stimulating skin to produce more collagen which makes skin look fuller, younger and healthier

5 – Fade or remove spider veins

6 – Improve the appearance of Acne scars and discolored skin from Acne

Our IPL Laser is used for these options

1 – Remove hair to replace waxing and shaving

2 – Use as the next step, after the Q-switch laser has treated sun damaged skin to add more skin color blending. Think of the q-switch laser as step 1 to clear spots and then the IPL laser is used to blend and lighten skin color as step 2.

What are the most common risks or mistakes?

Most skin lasers are designed to target color. An example is a person with white skin who has dark spots from sun damage. The laser targets the dark spots while leaving the white or light colored skin alone. Same with a tattoo.

The color in skin is caused by Melanin. A dark spot has more melanin in the skin than surrounding normal skin.

Many people in the DR have Latin/Tan colored skin, or Black. This means they have much more melanin in their skin than a person with white or light skin.

People with darker skin usually do not have the same types of sun damage with spots as people with light skin.

A laser has various lenses or attachments. Some are specifically designed to target melanin. If these attachments are used on a person with darker skin the laser may clear a skin spot and also clear the natural dark skin color leaving a white spot.

People with lighter skin do not have this risk, but for people with darker skin this is an issue to be aware of.

Assume a person has darker skin and they want to have acne scars and spots improved on their face. The laser technician would select the 1064 lens and adjust the machine settings for dark skin.

The lenses and settings for light skin would be different.

For people with darker skin we prefer not to offer tattoo removal due to these skin color issues. What we can do for people with darker skin is improve the appearance of acne scars and stimulate collagen so the face looks younger.

This is the most common mistake: A laser technician aims the laser used to treat specific spots such as a freckle and has the power settings too high or they fire the laser 3 or 4 times into the same spot when only 1 or 2 are needed.

As you can imagine, that is too much energy on that specific freckle or sun-spot and can cause the spot to blister where it can take several weeks to heal and redness disappear.

I explained these issues so if you decide to get laser work done on your skin, regardless of using my company you have important knowledge to discuss these issues with any skin laser service.

Does lasering hurt?

Skin lasers may cause a slight itch after the laser hits a spot of skin. Our cosmetic and beauty lasers do not cause pain, but firing the laser at a large number of freckles or spots, or treat a large area of skin can cause some itching or the feeling of a sunburn.

We use numbing creams same as when getting a tattoo.

Is a Doctor required?

I want to be honest and careful with this subject. In the USA and Canada a doctor is required to be at the location where skin lasers are used, although the doctor is not required to have any training or use the lasers!

The government just wants the doctor’s license to be at the laser location such as an office or Med Spa.

A baby doctor and a basic nurse can start up a skin laser business and not have any experience or training with the lasers yet a cosmetologist with 20 years of skin beauty experience cannot do this. Welcome to the politics of the USA!

Doctor licenses and numerous State medical licenses are required just to buy a laser in the USA or Canada.

Then comes the expensive insurance and the risk of lawsuits, especially frivolous lawsuits from clients who just want to win some easy money.

None of these regulations or costs ensure the person using a laser has training and experience.

Medical/Doctor or Nursing college do not teach how to use skin lasers.

As you can imagine, all of these rules, regulations, licenses, insurance and risk of frivolous lawsuits makes the cost of offering laser skincare very expensive in USA or Canada and is why the prices for these services are so expensive.

An example is $600 to $1000 per hour in cities like Miami.

The only source of training for skin lasers is from the manufacturer, usually videos. And, practicing on artificial skin same as learning how to tattoo. And volunteers who allow a laser technician trainee to perform procedures on test patches of skin. The volunteer gets free laser skincare and the laser technician trainee is practicing with real people.

Learning to use a skin laser is not difficult. The most important issues are knowing which laser attachments, power settings and techniques are best used on light vs. dark skin.

And, how to use a laser to target and remove a spot compared to using a laser like a paint brush to cover a larger area of skin such as when lightening discolored skin.

The Dominican Republic does not have the rules and regulations as in the USA. Not having so many regulations makes the overhead costs lower than in the USA which means lower prices in the DR for skin laser services!

I will share my personal story and connect this to investing in buying expensive medical quality lasers, shipping to the Dominican Republic and partnering with an established beauty salon to offer skin laser services on the North Coast from Puerto Plata through Cabarete.

A – My mother has very bad sun damaged skin. So bad she does not wear shorts because is embarrassed by the many large dark sun and age spots, discolored skin and spider veins. For many years I urged her to get laser skincare but she did not want to spend the money due to the high costs in the USA.

B – I own a home on North Coast of DR and live here part time while also living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. When visiting the DR I researched to find skin laser services thinking I could fly my mother to DR for lower cost skin laser care. I found the only skin laser services are in Santo Domingo and Santiago and most are for hair removal, not anti-aging or improving sun damage.

That fact motivated me to research skin lasers as a business opportunity in the DR.

My research showed a Q-switch and IPL laser are the two best options for anti-aging, improving sun damage and cosmetic/beauty laser services.

I selected the best manufacture and invested the money to purchase top quality medical grade lasers that I had shipped to the DR.

The manufacturer provided quality training and I viewed many videos showing laser technicians using lasers to treat various skin issues.

In fact, I used to be in a relationship with a girl in Boca Raton Florida who owns the largest laser skincare service in South Florida. She is the skincare expert who the wealthy women go to for skin laser work and to look younger.

I used to visit her office and observe the laser technicians working on clients and brought my daughter there to have a tattoo removed.

When observing the technicians actually use the laser, I realized it’s not that difficult to learn. The most important issues are learning which lasers and methods are best used with light vs. dark skin.

After purchasing the lasers and shipping to the DR I used the lasers on myself as the first volunteer to practice with

I used to spend a lot of time in the sun to be tan. As I grew older I began to develop freckles and the beginning of sunspots on arms and legs.

I used the lasers to successfully remove over 50 freckles and spots from my legs and arms where today they are 100% gone, no scars and no evidence these spots ever existed.

This is when I made the decision to start up this business in the DR and contacted Antionette who owns the Salon/Spa in Sosua where she has cut my hair over the past 5 years.

I knew it was best to partner with a person who owns an established beauty salon vs. find office space and open a laser/only salon. A salon that offers hair, nails and now the skin laser services is a more complete business.

I recruited people in the DR to become the trained laser technicians. Requirements were to speak English, Spanish and have education and experience with cosmetology such as beauty and skincare.

We provided the laser technician trainees with the professional training from the manufacturer and they also practiced on me and other volunteers before we officially opened our business to the public.

Antionette set up a private area in her salon for the laser skincare services.

This is important. Regardless if you use my service or another, the correct process is to start with a small test patch on your skin. The laser technician can look at your skin issue and explain the correct laser to use and the A to Z process.

If you approve, the laser technician can use the laser on the small test patch to see how your skin reacts to the laser.

This small test also makes you feel more relaxed because you will see the skin reaction before any more laser work is done.

====================================================

Next, I am going to use Mary as an imaginary person with skin issues that she wants to improve with lasers. I will describe the skin problems along with the correct procedure and educate you regarding the time it takes to complete a skin lasering process so the skin issue is correctly improved.

An issue you need to be aware of is depending on your skin issue it may take several appointments where the work is done in steps. And, your skin needs time to heal in-between the appointments.

For people who have sun damage on various parts of their body it could take many months to working on so much skin and do the job correctly.

Some people may need stay in DR quite some time to complete so much skin laser work or travel back to the DR as needed for ongoing appointments and continued steps in the process.

Pretend Mary has one leg that is covered with sun damage, many freckles, brown spots, discolored skin and some spider veins.

She also has an arm with a few freckles.

Finally, her forehead has some discolored older looking skin and some acne scars with red marks on her cheeks.

As I explain how to treat these different skin issues and the possible number of appointments and time, you can apply this information to your personal skin and situation to at least be more informed.

Mary’s leg with the many freckles and sunspots: The Q-switched laser is used with lenses such as 532 and 1064.

A – The 532 lens is used to target freckles and dark spots. This laser causes the dark color in a freckle or sunspot to break up and dissolve. The result can be the dead skin cells with the color rising up into a small scab that heals and flakes off in a week or two. As the scab flakes off the dark color is gone and new skin with normal color has grown to replace the old discolored skin.

In this example Mary has a huge number of spots and freckles and discolored skin on her leg. This can be 1000 small individual spots. It may take a few appointments to fire the laser at so many small spots.

Although the laser does not cause pain, it can cause an itch or feeling of minor sunburn. A person like Mary may want to have her leg & skin improved over time rather than rush to try and do too much in one multi hour appointment.

And, the laser technician may inform Mary upfront that because the skin on her leg is so bad, the technician may need to work the leg in different steps over a number of appointments.

Example: I would use the 532 or 1064 lenses to target a large number of freckles and spots on Mary’s leg. The result will be a large number of small red spots that will heal over a few weeks. The old skin with the spots will flake off and be replaced by new normal colored skin.

It may take 4 to 6 weeks for Mary’s leg skin to heal from this 1st appointment.

Mary comes back for the 2nd appointment and I switch to using the IPL laser. The IPL has a wider and broader laser beam and is used for different purposes than the Q-switch laser.

Instead of targeting spots as with the Q-switched laser, I use the IPL in a sweeping motion moving slowly over Mary’s leg and firing the laser over and over in bursts.

The intense light causes discoloration in Mary’s leg skin to lighten and blend. When finished with the IPL I may go back to using the Q-switch laser to target any remaining freckles and spots.

Mary will need a month of healing and depending on how her skin reacted she may be ok or may want to come back for 1 or 2 more treatments.

Dealing with your skin is Serious. I am sure you agree rushing where mistakes can be made is not what you want. Going slow, smart and steady is a much better plan.

Here is a good visual to help you understand. Imagine Mary has a large tattoo and a laser is used to clear the tattoo. In the first appointment the dark ink was faded but not 100% erased.

Mary will need time to heal and then come back for 1 or 2 more appointments where each time the ink from the tattoo fades more until is gone.

It’s the same with sun damage such as freckles, spots and discolored skin.

Mary’s arm has a few freckles: This is easy, I would use the 532 or 1064 lenses to target and zap these freckles. It is possible to clear them in just one appointment.

Mary’s face, yellowish older looking skin on her forehead and acne scars with red marks:

A – I would use the 1064 or 755 laser lens to brighten and lighten the skin on Mary’s forehead. I could also use the IPL laser for this same purpose. These lasers can fade the yellowish old looking color and cause skin to create more collagen which causes the skin to look fuller and younger.

B – For the acne, I would use the 532 or 1064 lens to target the red/dark marks from the acne. Same as targeting freckles and sunspots. I would then use the 755 or 1064 like using a fine paint brush to treat the entire face area around the acne. These lasers do not burn off skin to remove the scars. They cause the skin to produce more collagen which causes the skin to be more full. This stretches the acne scars and makes them less noticeable.

C – Mary would need 4 to 6 weeks of healing and then come back for treatment with the IPL laser. I would use the IPL to treat Mary’s entire face for color skin lightening, color blending and toning.

The initial appointments clear and improve damage from the acne but the skin is not 100% clear and balanced, yet. This is why the IPL is used later to lighten, blend, tone and balance the skin.

You can apply all of this information to your personal skin issues so you are more educated and informed.

Si vives en República Dominicana o viajas con frecuencia al país. If you live here or stay in DR many months, it’s easy to add these services into your schedule. If you need significant help with your skin, this will require numbers of sessions with weeks of healing between each session. In that example you would need to be in the DR long enough time or travel back to DR to enjoy some relaxation and coordinate more sessions per trip.

If you are like my mother who has terribly sun damaged skin over her entire body you can expect at least 50% improvement so your skin will look much better.

If skin has been badly damaged I would not want to make promises I cannot keep. I am not confident that badly damaged skin can be 100% cleared.

However, at my age and if I could improve my skin by 50%, that is ok for me 🙂

For people who have badly damaged skin over much of their body an option is to use lasering to treat a section of body over 6 months to see how it goes and then decide if investing in completing the entire body is a good choice.

Dave Fogg

FROM: David Fogg, company owner.
